Small Forehead Lump Removal – Lipoma Excision and Healing

A patient attended our clinic with a small lump in the middle of the forehead. The lump had been present for around nine years, previously assessed by their GP and confirmed as a benign lipoma. Although it hadn’t changed in size or caused any discomfort, the patient decided to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.

Dr Jana Torres-Grau carried out the procedure, ensuring a precise excision with the smallest possible scar and a natural cosmetic outcome.

What Causes Small Lumps on the Forehead?

Most small lumps on the forehead are harmless and caused by conditions such as:

  • Lipomas: soft, fatty lumps beneath the skin that grow slowly over time
  • Sebaceous cysts: blocked glands that form round, firm bumps
  • Fibromas or other benign growths: less common but non-cancerous

A consultation and, where needed, imaging or biopsy help confirm the diagnosis. In this case, the lump was confirmed to be a lipoma, a benign fatty lump, and suitable for surgical removal.

The Forehead Lump Removal Procedure

The area was numbed with local anaesthetic to make the procedure completely comfortable. A small incision was made directly over the lump, and the lipoma was carefully removed in one piece from beneath the skin.

Once the lipoma was excised, the site was cleaned and closed in two layers for optimal healing:

  • 5-0 Monocryl sutures beneath the skin for support
  • 6-0 Ethilon fine stitches on the surface for a precise, minimal scar

The incision was covered with steri-strips and micropore tape to protect it during the initial healing period.

The entire procedure took less than an hour, and the patient was able to go home the same day.

Healing and Cosmetic Results

An immediate post-procedure photo showed a fine linear scar on the forehead with delicate stitches in place.

At the one-month review, the area had healed beautifully. The scar had already started to fade and soften, leaving only a slight thickening that will continue to settle over the coming months. The patient also noted a small bump in the area, which was confirmed to be the natural bone contour rather than a recurrence of the lump.

Over time, the scar will continue to blend with the skin, leaving only a faint line that is barely noticeable.

Aftercare and Recovery

After a small forehead lump removal, patients are advised to:

  • Keep the wound clean and dry for the first 24–48 hours
  • Avoid touching or disturbing the dressing
  • Protect the area from sun exposure to minimise scarring
  • Attend their follow-up review if they have any concerns (free aftercare is provided)

Most scars settle within 6–12 months, flattening and lightening to match the surrounding skin.
