Moles are incredibly common, and in most cases, completely harmless. But certain changes in the size, shape, or colour of a mole can be an early sign of something more serious – including melanoma. That’s why skin examinations remain one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to monitor your skin health and catch problems early.

When Should You Get a Mole Checked?

If you’ve noticed a new mole, or an existing one that’s started changing, it’s best to get it examined by a qualified dermatologist. Key signs to look out for include:

  • Moles that grow quickly or have irregular borders
  • A mix of colours (brown, black, pink, or red) within one mole
  • Itching, bleeding, or crusting
  • Any mole that looks noticeably different from the rest

Even if your mole doesn’t look concerning, it’s worth getting peace of mind. Dermatologists can assess whether it’s benign or needs further examination – often in just a single visit.

What Happens During a Skin Examination?

A skin examination is straightforward and typically non-invasive. Your dermatologist will inspect the mole visually, sometimes using a dermatoscope (a handheld magnifier) to look more closely at pigmentation patterns.

In some cases, mole mapping may be recommended – especially if you have many moles or a personal/family history of skin cancer. If the dermatologist is unsure about the nature of the mole, they may suggest removal for histology (laboratory analysis) to rule out anything serious.

Early Detection Makes a Difference

Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early, and most suspicious moles turn out to be benign. But waiting or ignoring symptoms increases the chance of delayed diagnosis. Skin checks are quick, affordable, and available with minimal wait times – especially at private dermatology clinics.

If you’re unsure whether a mole needs checking, book a consultation and let a specialist take a closer look. It’s always better to act early than to worry later.
