Lipoma removal is a minor surgical procedure, but like any skin incision, it can leave a scar – even when performed with precision. While most scars from lipoma surgery are small and fade well over time, factors like the size of the lipoma, its location, and how your skin heals can all play a role in how noticeable the mark becomes.

At City Dermatology Clinic, we aim for minimal scarring using careful surgical techniques and clear aftercare advice. Here’s what you need to know about what causes scarring, how to reduce it, and what to expect as your skin heals.

Will Lipoma Removal Leave a Scar? What to Expect

Yes, a small scar is expected after lipoma removal, as the procedure involves a skin incision. However, in most cases the scar fades well – particularly when:

  • The lipoma is small or superficial
  • The surgeon uses a clean, linear incision
  • The area is closed in layers, which reduces surface tension
  • The wound is kept clean and undisturbed during healing

Factors that influence scarring:

  • Size of the lipoma – Larger growths may require longer cuts
  • Depth – Deeper lipomas may require more dissection
  • Location – Areas with more movement or tension (shoulders, chest, back) may scar slightly more
  • Skin type – Some skin types are more prone to hyperpigmentation or raised scars
  • Wound healing – Poor healing, infection, or wound tension can increase scar thickness

When the procedure is done properly, most scars heal as a fine, flat line that fades significantly within 3–6 months.

How to Minimise Scarring After Lipoma Removal

Proper aftercare is one of the most effective ways to reduce scarring. Here’s what we recommend:

During the initial healing phase (first 2 weeks):

  • Keep the wound dry and clean for the first 48 hours
  • Avoid stretching or pulling the area (especially on the back or limbs)
  • Follow dressing instructions – change as advised, and don’t pick at scabs
  • Avoid direct sun exposure while the wound is fresh

Once the wound has closed (usually after 2–3 weeks):

  • Use silicone gel or scar reduction sheets, which help flatten and fade scars
  • Moisturise the area daily with a non-perfumed cream
  • Massage the scar gently to improve blood flow and reduce stiffness
  • Wear sun protection (SPF 30+) over the scar for several months to prevent darkening

Avoid applying creams or oils while the wound is still open unless advised.

How Long Until the Scar Fades? Realistic Healing Timeline

Healing is gradual and varies between individuals, but here’s a typical scarring timeline:

Time After SurgeryWhat to Expect
Week 1–2Redness, scabbing or early healing visible
Week 3–4Scar line forms; may feel slightly firm
Month 2–3Scar starts to flatten and fade in colour
Month 4–6Significant fading; scar usually smooth and soft
6–12 monthsFinal appearance – barely visible in most cases

If the scar remains raised, itchy, or discoloured after 3–4 months, your doctor may recommend treatments like steroid creams, laser, or microneedling, depending on your skin type.
