Cysts are common, slow-growing lumps that often seem harmless – until they start causing discomfort, pain, or visible swelling. While some people choose to leave them alone, not removing a cyst can lead to complications over time, especially if it becomes infected or starts to grow rapidly. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering whether to get it treated.

Can a Cyst Go Away on Its Own?

Most cysts do not go away without treatment. While some may shrink slightly, especially if inflammation subsides, the underlying sac remains beneath the skin. It’s this sac – whether it’s from a sebaceous gland, epidermoid layer, or hair follicle – that causes the cyst to refill over time.

Even if a cyst drains spontaneously or due to pressure, it will likely return unless the wall is removed completely. This is why home remedies, squeezing, or antibiotics alone don’t provide a long-term solution.

Risks of Leaving a Cyst Untreated

Potential IssueWhat Can Happen
InfectionThe cyst can become red, swollen, painful, and filled with pus, sometimes requiring urgent drainage.
RuptureCysts under pressure may burst internally, leading to inflammation or localised scarring.
Abscess formationInfected cysts can develop into abscesses that may require surgical drainage and antibiotics.
Cosmetic concernsFacial or visible cysts may continue to enlarge, become noticeable, or leave pigmentation and scarring.
MisdiagnosisSome cysts may be mistaken for lipomas or other growths – and very rarely, more serious conditions. A professional assessment ensures peace of mind.

Delaying removal often makes the procedure more complex, particularly if the area becomes inflamed or the cyst ruptures under the skin.

When Removal Is the Right Option

If the cyst is painless, small, and not changing, it may be safe to monitor. But cyst removal is usually advised in the following cases:

  • The cyst is growing or changing shape
  • It’s painful, inflamed, or repeatedly infected
  • It’s on the face, scalp, or another visible area
  • It’s interfering with daily activities (e.g. shaving, wearing clothes)
  • You’ve had similar cysts before or want a permanent solution

At City Dermatology Clinic, most cysts can be removed during a short, in-clinic procedure – often on the same day as your consultation. Local anaesthetic is used, and the entire cyst wall is removed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Seeing a dermatologist or surgeon early can prevent complications and give you the best cosmetic outcome.
